Deputy Secretary Mary L. Livers has named Girard J. Melancon, Assistant Secretary, as a new member of the OJJ Leadership Team in September of 2009. Mr. Melancon came to OJJ from the Louisiana Workforce Commission, where he served as Director for the Community Development Block Grant/ Recovery Workforce Training Program (CDBG/RWTP). A native of Kankakee, Ill., his background is rooted in community and neighborhood building. He joined the Louisiana Workforce Commission after working as community organizer for the PICO National Network, an ecumenical advocacy organization. Mr. Melancon has seven years’ experience as a Community Transitional Specialist for La Plata County Youth Services in Durango, Colorado. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in sociology and human services from Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, and a Master of Science in Public Administration, with a concentration in finance, from Southern University's Nelson Mandela School of Public Policy and Urban Development. He is currently a doctoral candidate in higher education administration at the University of New Orleans. “I look forward to working with OJJ’s internal and external stakeholders to create and implement an effective juvenile justice framework,” Mr. Melancon said.
